Ethical AI in life and non-life insurance
The challenge
European insurers face rising regulatory and societal pressure to adopt AI while carrying a long history of social controversy. The work had to balance transparency against data privacy, avoid bias and discrimination in models, and meet the expectations of clients, companies and society at once. AI adoption at this scale needed a structured way to manage the ethical dilemmas that arise in real use cases.
How we worked
- A workshop-based methodology involving technical experts from actuarial science, data science and compliance
- Combination of existing governance frameworks, academic literature and sector expertise
- Conducted with the Danish trade association for insurance companies and pension funds

What came out of it
The ethical-dilemma mapping tool lets insurers assess the trade-offs in a given AI use case across fairness, transparency and governance, and record the reasoning behind the decision they take.
