A university course on wellbeing and sustainability in the Nordics
Nordic wellbeing & sustainability programme
Six lectures on subjective wellbeing, wellbeing economics and sustainability, built around the World Happiness Report and the OECD Better Life Index for an honours cohort.
The challenge
The course had to make wellbeing, happiness and sustainability tractable for students from very different academic backgrounds, and address how Nordic economic models and social policies do or do not transfer to other socio-economic contexts.
What we did
- Six lectures drawing on research in subjective wellbeing, wellbeing economics and sustainability studies
- Theory paired with real-world Nordic case studies
- Case material from the UN World Happiness Report, the OECD Better Life Index and other indices
- Delivered with a United States university's programme coordination
The outcome
An academic elective that gave students a working grasp of how wellbeing is measured and maintained, and where those measures break down when moved between contexts.
